"Daydream" In Your Own Backyard The Cecil County Arts Council recently held an unveiling party for the "Just A Daydream Away" public art project. This venture is the result of a year long collaboration between the Arts Council, the County's tourism office, and the towns in Cecil County. The concept was to have each town choose an artist to create an artwork representing their perception of the county's tourism slogan, "just a daydream away". The goal is to encourage residents and tourists to visit all of Cecil County, particularly areas they may not already be familiar with, and, in the process, view beautiful artwork created by a few of the county's many talented artists. So far, five of the county's towns have completed projects by their local artists. The public is now able to view these pieces at their permanent homes throughout the county. As most of the pieces are inside town-owned buildings and their hours vary, all cannot be visited in one day. However, this was the point. We encourage you not only to visit the artwork, but also to experience what each town has to offer. Undiscovered scenery, shops and restaurants are just waiting for you to arrive. You'll also be pleasantly surprised by the various artists' renditions of the theme. Some artists incorporated elements specific to their town and some chose a more broad interpretation. This illustrates one of the beauties of art, the many different ways to view the same thing. We hope that as the "tour" grows in popularity and as the art and artists gain notoriety, the project will continue, with all of the towns having completed artwork and more artists offering their renditions of the theme. If you would like to participate, please call the Arts Council to find out how. Finally, we would like to congratulate the artists chosen by the towns for their works depicting, "Just A Daydream Away." The artists were granted a stipend for their completed works donated by the towns and tourism. The following artists are currently on display: Pat & Darlene Fowler for Rising Sun, Joanne Hamilton for Cecilton, Geraldine McKweon for Elkton, and Donna Winterling for Chesapeake City. The Charlestown artist wishes to remain anonymous. To find the completed pieces, visit Cecilton's Town Hall at 117 West Main Street, Chesapeake City's Town Hall at 108 Bohemia Avenue, Charlestown's 107 Building at 343 Market Street, Elkton's Chamber and Alliance at 101 East Main, and on the side of the bridge on Wilson Street near the corner of Wilson and Kirk's Court in Rising Sun. (If you park in the parking lot nearby, the stream will be straight ahead and the mural is on the bridge to the right.) With all the talk about the benefits of a "Stay-cation", the towns of Ceci County can be your next destination. |
